The club was awarded as the 30th MLS expansion team on May 18, 2023, and is scheduled to begin play in the 2025 season. The ownership group is led by British-Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, the first Native American tribe to have an ownership stake in a professional soccer club. The team plays its home matches at Snapdragon Stadium. A key part of the club's strategy is youth development through a partnership with the Right to Dream academy, also owned by Mansour, which will have a residential facility in San Diego.
