Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority
Overview
The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) is a U.S. government entity within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that supports the advanced development and procurement of medical countermeasures (MCMs) against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, as well as pandemic influenza and emerging infectious diseases. BARDA acts as a bridge between the federal government and the biomedical industry, providing funding, technical assistance, and core services to partner companies to move products from research through advanced development and towards FDA approval. It utilizes public-private partnerships to accelerate the development of vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and other necessary technologies for public health emergencies. BARDA also has a venture capital arm, BARDA Ventures, which it operates in partnership with the Global Health Investment Corporation (GHIC) to invest in innovative technologies.
