Overview
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is India's apex development financial institution (DFI), fully owned by the Government of India. Established by an Act of Parliament, its mission is to promote sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural development. NABARD's key functions include refinancing banks and financial institutions that provide rural credit, supervising regional rural and cooperative banks, and financing rural infrastructure. It also engages in direct investment activities through a dedicated Department of Subsidiaries and Strategic Investments and a venture capital subsidiary, NABVENTURES Ltd., which manages alternative investment funds. As of March 31, 2024, the bank's total balance sheet size was ₹9.1 lakh crore (approximately $109 billion USD).
