The University of Nottingham
Overview
The University of Nottingham engages in investment activities through two main channels. Firstly, it operates as a direct investor in early-stage companies through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nottingham Technology Ventures Ltd (NTV). NTV manages the university's active portfolio of spin-out companies, which are formed to commercialize academic research. NTV also manages the Nottingham Invention Fund, a £5 million fund dedicated to investing in these university spin-outs to support their development and growth. Secondly, the University manages an endowment fund to support its academic and public service programs. In 2021, this consisted of a £59.4 million endowment portfolio and a £9.5 million medium-term investment fund, which are managed with a focus on sustainability and ethical considerations. These dual functions mean the university acts as both a direct venture capital investor and as a limited partner (LP) through its endowment.
