UN Women
Overview
UN Women is a United Nations agency dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. It was created by the UN General Assembly in 2010 to accelerate progress on meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide. The organization works to develop and uphold standards for gender equality, supports UN member states in implementing these standards through technical and financial support, and leads and coordinates the UN system's work on gender equality. Its main areas of work include leadership and political participation, economic empowerment, ending violence against women, peace and security, and humanitarian action. UN Women provides grants to government agencies and civil society groups through two main funds: the Fund for Gender Equality and the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.
