Wisconsin Department of Health Services

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is a governmental agency of the U.S. state of Wisconsin responsible for maintaining public health. Its mission is to protect and promote the health and safety of the people of Wisconsin. The department administers a wide range of services, including public health, mental health and substance abuse, long-term care, and medical assistance. It is one of the largest state agencies in Wisconsin, with an annual budget of roughly $15 billion and more than 6,700 employees. DHS distributes state and federal funds via grants to other organizations to achieve its public policy goals. For example, it awarded a $1.2 million grant to Recovery.com using funds from the National Prescription Opiate Litigation settlement.
