Company Overview
MoviePass, Inc. provides a subscription-based movie ticketing service in the United States. Originally founded in 2011 by Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt, the service allowed subscribers to watch a set number of movies in theaters for a monthly fee. The company gained massive popularity after being acquired by Helios and Matheson Analytics (HMNY) in 2017 and dropping its price to $9.95 per month, which led to a subscriber base of over three million. However, this business model proved unsustainable, leading to financial issues and the service's shutdown in September 2019, followed by HMNY's Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2020. In late 2021, co-founder Stacy Spikes reacquired the company out of bankruptcy and officially relaunched the service nationwide in 2023. The new version operates on a credit-based system, with different pricing tiers that provide subscribers with a monthly allotment of credits to be redeemed for movie tickets at participating theaters.
